Enugu State, under the visionary leadership of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has embarked on a transformative journey towards modernization and sustainable development. The state government has focused on key infrastructure projects designed to improve the quality of life for residents, stimulate economic growth, and position Enugu as a hub for innovation and investment in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
A delegation from the National Economic Council Secretariat, Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, recently visited Enugu State to assess the progress of various infrastructure projects. The delegation was led by Dr. (Mrs.) Chinwe Deborah Okah, Hon. Commissioner of Budget and Planning for Ebonyi State, and included Enoch Samuel, Assistant Director from the Office of the Vice President; Olayiwola Temitope Yusuf, Chief Planning Officer; and Mrs. Dorothy Uwaoma, Deputy Director.
The delegation was warmly received by Chief Barr Chris-Roberts Ozongwu, the Hon. Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Enugu State, who also serves as the head of the Monitoring and Implementation Team, alongside Mrs. Clara Nwakaego Eze, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
Smart Schools
Enugu State has prioritized education as a cornerstone for long-term socio-economic development. The government plans to build 260 smart schools, ensuring each of the state’s 260 wards has access to modern educational facilities. These Smart Schools are equipped with cutting-edge learning technologies, enhancing the educational experience for students and preparing them for a competitive global workforce.
Type-2 Primary Health Centers (PHCs)
The state government is constructing 260 Type-2 Primary Health Centers, one in each of the state’s 260 wards. This initiative aims to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare at the grassroots level, ensuring that every community has access to essential medical services.
Smart Green House Farm Projects
The Smart Green House Farm projects represent a significant leap forward in agricultural modernization. These farms incorporate cutting-edge technology to increase crop yields, reduce water consumption, and optimize resource use.
300-Bed Ultra-Modern Specialist Hospital
The Mbah administration has invested in a 300-bed ultra-modern specialist hospital. This facility is designed to provide world-class medical services, reduce medical tourism, and improve overall public health outcomes.
Road Infrastructure
Major roads and street road projects are underway to improve connectivity, ease transportation, and reduce travel times across the state. The dualization of the 43.7 km Penoks-Abakpa-Ugwogo Nike-Opi Nsukka Road is a critical corridor aimed at enhancing transportation efficiency and boosting economic activities in the region.
Water Supply and Energy Projects
The Mbah administration has made significant strides in enhancing the state’s water supply. It commissioned a 70 million litre per day water plant, raising the state’s capacity from the occasional two million litres per day to 70 million litres, with plans to reach 120 million litres per day soon.
Transport Terminals and Mass Transit
The Enugu Air, CNG Mass Transit Programme, and ultramodern transport terminals at key locations such as Holy Ghost, Abakpa, and Garriki have been constructed from scratch by the Mbah administration. These facilities aim to streamline urban transport, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance public mobility.
Energy and Power Projects
The state has commissioned new 500 KVA transformers and laid the foundation for Primary Healthcare (PHC) centers in various communities. These efforts aim to stabilize power supply and support essential community services.
International Conference Center
The newly constructed International Conference Center boasts a 5000-seat capacity. Delegates noted that this facility is unparalleled in Southeast Nigeria, providing a world-class venue for business, cultural, and international events.
Presidential Hotel Revitalization
The once-abandoned Presidential Hotel has been revived, transforming it into a vibrant economic asset for the state. This project is expected to boost tourism, create jobs, and attract further investment.
These comprehensive infrastructure projects reflect Governor Mbah’s commitment to transforming Enugu State into a modern, economically competitive, and socially progressive region. As Enugu continues on this path of rapid development, the positive impacts on local communities and the broader economy are expected to grow significantly.
